When you hear stories recalled by bikers or even see the vlogs they film, there’s always an adrenaline rush that follows. While director Guru Pawan establishes his four leads with strong characterisation, the execution, lack of pace and emotional connect ensure you never feel that rush.

Mahendra (Srikanth), Lakshmi (Bhumika Chawla), Ajay (Sumanth Ashwin) and Meghana (Tanya Hope) are bikers who have their own goals to fulfil. Mahendra wants to go to Ladakh on his favourite bike to meet his first love Tulasi, with whom he separated 25 years ago. Lakshmi is a middle-class woman who tries to juggle her family with dreams. She had a checklist as a young woman and now realises it’s time to follow her heart to fulfil her father’s dream. Risking his life to lead an adventurous ride and pursue his passion for vlogging is Ajay, but his father asks him to leave home as he deems him a ‘failure’. He sets out on a stolen bike to race once he reaches Ladakh. Dejected by a failed love story, Meghana also looks for some solace on the long, winding roads.

Guru Pawan writes a gutsy road trip with Idhe Maa Katha that is strong on paper but fails in execution. The film even gives you hope, the way it all begins, introducing each character and their relatable storylines. But as things progress, proceedings get monotonous and it takes a while before the main leads even meet. After that there’s a whole lot of visuals of the roads they take apart from the dhaba breaks. Lack of adventure and thrill make you wonder when things will pick up pace.

Soon things become so tedious that you even begin to notice how Ajay’s spiky hair is miraculously never dishevelled after using a helmet. His hyper character feels the need to keep talking and it irks you. While the director manages to focus on the hurdles faced by these characters individually, he fails to engage when it comes to the biking part of it. The ‘interval bang’ fizzles out and leaves no impact despite revealing a few interesting facts.

The second half focuses on how they become a team and help each other to overcome hurdles, apart from tagging together on a beautiful journey. Logic goes for a toss soon when it seems like the director loses focus on the screenplay and introduces new characters just to create issues for the leads. The cliché love track between Ajay and Meghana is weak. And despite having four strong characters, he fails to show any proper chemistry between them all. To add to the woes, Sapthagiri and Prithvi’s ‘comedy’ fails to invoke laughter. Idhe Maa Katha picks up pace only once they reach Himachal Pradesh by pre-climax but the ending is yet again routine and predictable. The film’s doesn’t even offer a thrilling bike race scene, it doesn’t seem remotely realistic.

Srikanth and Bhumika add heft to the film with their remarkable performances while Sumanth and Tanya are plain okay. Songs add to the lag in the screenplay and the BGM fails to impress too. While the climax supposedly happens in Ladakh, it’s evident parts of it are shot in Hyderabad. Production values and cinematography are okay.

Even though director Pawan picks a story that’s novel to Telugu cinema, routine proceedings let it down. This gutsy road trip film completely veers off-road.
